Between 1-2% of the adult population have chronic heart failure, with 6-10% of people over the age of 65 years suffering from the disorder. While the age adjusted incidence of chronic heart failure has remained stable over the last 20 years, its prevalence has increased with over one million cases in the United Kingdom alone. This practical pocketbook provides a guide for healthcare professionals - doctors, nurses and technical staff - who manage patients with chronic heart failure. Each chapter is written by a leader in that particular area of the treatment or investigation of chronic heart failure and provides a concise but comprehensive review of each area. As a whole the book provides a guide to aetiology, epidemiology, physiology and pathophysiology, and investigation and treatment of chronic heart failure close up . Further chapters address chronic heart failure with preserved systolic function and complex congenital causes of chronic heart failure. As chronic heart failure remains an often lethal disorder, one chapter focuses on the management of patients with advanced chronic heart failure with a section on end of life situations. Each chapter is able to 'stand alone' with key points at the beginning of each chapter and diagrams and flow charts to illustrate these key points.

Heart Failure: Bench to Bedside helps address a significant need to develop new paradigms and to identify novel therapeutic targets for this pervasive disease. An authoritative contribution to the field, this book provides a detailed description of new findings and emerging methodologies, as well as a critical clinical evaluation of the complex HF syndrome and future therapies. Heart Failure: Bench to Bedside includes a primer on gene profiling and bioenergetics of the normal heart and a discussion of the molecular, genetic, biochemical and cellular techniques critical to understanding HF. Further chapters discuss cardiac remodeling, oxidative stress, and alterations in other organs and systems that are often associated with HF. This book thoughtfully evaluates current and forthcoming diagnostic techniques and therapies, pharmaceutical and pharmacogenomic-based individualized medicine, gene and cell-based therapies, and the search for new frontiers. The number of people suffering from this debilitating condition is predicted to grow exponentially over the next decade. This has serious implications for the health services. Investigating heart failure is not cheap even where facilities exist. The drugs used, though effective – often remarkably so – are also costly as are laboratory investigations. These again are not cheap. People with heart failure require frequent admissions to hospital and occupy many beds and much staff attention. All of these factors are set to increase over the next decades. This eclectic collection of papers tackles many of the issues that concern those who care for individuals with heart failure; organisation of services, exercise, palliative care amongst them, but also novel and rarely discussed issues. The book is suited to both pre and post-registered health care students. We do not supply inspection copies but we do supply Examination copies, whereby a course leader has 30 days to evaluate the book, then choose to adopt, purchase or return the book.
